WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
Empowering Women through Safe Drinking Water
At SWI, we recognize the profound impact that access to safe drinking water can have on women's empowerment, especially in tribal communities where traditional water purification methods involve collecting firewood.
Our initiative focuses on distributing a modern and efficient drinking water disinfectant that households can use and dose at home, offering significant advantages for women and children.
The Problem
In many tribal villages, women and children bear the responsibility for water, often spending hours each day on this task. Additionally, traditional water purification methods, such as boiling water using firewood, result in hours per day spend for collecting firewood.
Our Contribution
By providing households with a modern drinking water disinfectant, we address critical challenges while empowering women and advancing gender equality, in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 5.
Advantages for Women and Children
-
Time and Effort Savings: Our disinfectant solution eliminates the need for boiling water with firewood, saving women considerable time and effort previously spent collecting wood.
-
Improved Health: Access to safe drinking water reduces waterborne illnesses, benefiting the health and well-being of women and children.
-
Environmental Conservation: By reducing the demand for firewood, our project reduces indoor air pollution, positively impacting women's and children´s respiratory health.
-
Economic Empowerment: Women can redirect time saved from collecting firewood towards income-generating activities or education, enhancing economic independence and decision-making within the household.
-
Community Leadership: Women become advocates for safe water practices, playing a vital role in promoting health and hygiene within their communities.
Achieving Gender Equality (UN SDG No. 5)
Our project directly supports UN SDG No. 5 by promoting gender equality and empowering women through improved access to safe drinking water. By addressing water-related challenges and reducing the burden of collecting firewood, we create opportunities for women to lead healthier, more empowered lives.
