The Project
As part of its effort to facilitate access to safe drinking water in India, SWI India, with the support of local implementation partners, provides in a first project phase ca 250,000 individuals in rural and remote tribal villages of Melghat with a modern and highly efficient drinking water disinfectant.
By distributing the water disinfectant regularly, the project eliminates the need for wood-fired boiling, reducing deforestation and carbon emissions. This double impact not only safeguards public health but also contributes significantly to climate protection.
The project empowers villagers, fostering resilience and sustainability in the face of environmental challenges. In Melghat and beyond, it serves as a model for community-driven climate action, showcasing the transformative potential of simple yet impactful interventions.
The project significantly enhances living conditions in participating villages by:
-
Minimizing participants' vulnerability to waterborne diseases.
-
Mitigating participants' exposure to toxic smoke from firewood used for boiling water.
-
Alleviating the time and financial burdens, particularly on women, associated with gathering and purchasing firewood for water boiling.
-
Reducing the risks of harm and violence faced by women and girls when collecting firewood away from home.
-
Lowering medical expenses by preventing waterborne illnesses.
-
Markedly enhancing participants' quality of life by offering a free and user-friendly method to access clean, safe drinking water.
The following subpages provide a comprehensive overview of the key aspects comprising the project's conceptual framework.
