Melghat Biodiversity

Melghat and the Melghat Tiger Reserve

The Melghat Tiger Reserve, nestled in the Amaravati district of Maharashtra, finds its home on the southern slopes of the Satpura Hill Range, in Central India. Situated 225 km west of Nagpur, this sanctuary has a rich history dating back to its establishment as a wildlife sanctuary in 1967, later earning the prestigious title of a tiger reserve in 1974. Melghat Tiger Reserve is one of the nation´s largest Tiger Reserves in terms of land area.

Beyond its majestic Bengal tigers, Melghat boasts a plethora of other notable and critically endangered wildlife, including Sloth Bears, Leopards, Indian Gaurs, Sambar Deer, Owls and other bird species, Nilgais, and more.

Protecting Biodiversity through Sustainable Water Solutions

Our climate protection initiative is not just about reducing carbon emissions—it's also about safeguarding local biodiversity. In tribal communities where firewood is traditionally collected for boiling water, our project introduces an innovative approach: distributing a drinking water disinfectant. This simple switch has profound benefits for both the environment and wildlife.

Preserving Forest Ecosystems

By eliminating the need to collect firewood for water purification, our project helps preserve precious forest ecosystems. The forests in Melghat are rich in biodiversity, home to diverse plant and animal species. Reducing deforestation for fuel wood means less disruption to these ecosystems, allowing flora and fauna to thrive undisturbed.

Mitigating Habitat Loss

Every bundle of firewood collected from the forest represents potential habitat loss for countless species. By promoting an alternative water treatment method without firewood, we reduce the pressure on forests, minimizing habitat fragmentation and degradation. This, in turn, helps maintain the balance of local ecosystems.

Conserving Wildlife Habitats

Many threatened and endangered species rely on intact forest habitats. By curbing the demand for firewood, we contribute to the conservation of these habitats, ensuring that wildlife populations have secure areas to live and reproduce. Our approach supports sustainable practices that harmonize human needs with wildlife conservation.
